The Best TV Shows I’m Loving & Their Wine Pairings

The Best TV Shows To Watch & What Times to Pair with them

During these challenging times, while we’re all home taking Shelter in Place, it seems most of my conversations not related to Corona Virus are, what are you watching and enjoying? As someone who loves TV and uses it to decompress, I am the perfect resource to share the best shows on TV now… See my list below. And lucky for you I’ve decided to share the best wine pairings with each show as well. What else do you need? Great tv and amazing wines….

The  Best Comedies on TV

Schitt’s Creek (Netflix or Prime Video): For one of the funniest shows on TV at the moment (I actually think it’s THE funniest), check out Schitt’s Creek. It is about a super-rich family in New York that loses all their money and moves to a small town and lives in the town motel. After watching just one episode you will fall in love.

Schitt's Creek

Iron Horse Sparkling Wine: A bottle of Iron Horse Sparkling Wine would be perfect for the upbeat mood of Schitt’s Creek. Shop Iron Horse online here.

Iron Horse Vineyards

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Prime Video): For a super light, upbeat comedy that takes place in New York City (all of your former NEw Yorkers like me will LOVE this), check out The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Gary Farrell Vineyard & Wines:  What a perfect pairing a beautiful glass of Chardonnay (for the ladies watching this show) or Pinot Noir (not to be sexist but I find men tend to prefer red to white wines) from Gary Farrell Wines. Shop Gary Farrell Wines online here or for a larger selection on Gary Farrell’s website here.

Shrill (Hulu): Another great comedy I’ve already watched straight through is Shrill. Annie is a full-figured woman who wants to change her life — but not her body. It’s a great watch and will make you happy and make you laugh which we all need right about now….

Shrill Hulu TV Series

Anaba Wines: For a fun girls night enjoying Shrill, I’d suggest a bottle of Anaba Wines. I just enjoyed their Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and I fell in love. Whether you enjoy a Pinot Noir (my go-to) or possibly a bottle of Anaba Wines Rose, you can’t go wrong.  Shop Anaba wines here.

Veep

Veep (HB): Apparently I’m a few years behind on this amazing comedy featuring Julia Lewis Dreyphus but now that I’m onboard I’m hooked! It’s super funny, light. Sort of reminds me of Parks & Recreation. Love it.

VEEP hbo

Landmark Vineyards: When I’m relaxing and in happy mode, I want a Happy Chardonnay. The 2017 Russian River Vineyards Chardonnay is nice and light. Perfect for an easy comedy. Shop Landmark Vineyards here.

Best Female Dramas on TV

Big Little Lies (HBO): By now, most of us have seen Big Littles Lies, but if you haven’t, it’s a great series to check out with a fabulous cast, including Reese Whitherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz.  It’s a great chick flick that’s fast-paced and hard to stop. Sadly there are only two seasons so pace yourself as it’s one of those shows you never want to end….

Big Little Lies

Carolina Sparkling Wines

Carolina Bale Blanc de Blancs: For a great chick flick I recommend a beautiful Sparkling Wine. This Blanc de Blanc from Caroline Bale (the sister brand to Charles Krug) is stunning.

Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu): Another great Reese Whitherspoon show with Kerry Washington that just came out is Little Fires Everywhere. I read the book and liked it but found it a bit slow. The tv show is much faster and with this great cast you’ll find yourself hooked very quickly.

Little Fires Everywhere Hulu

Seppi Wines: Seppi Wines is a newly released wine from my best friend Kelsey Phelps. It’s female-founded and seems like teh perfect pairing for Little Fires Everywhere starring two my favorite actresses, Reese & Kerry. Purchase Seppi Wines online here.  I would suggest you try a bottle of the Brut and the Rose and see which you prefer. They’re both lovely, super easy to drink and are perfect for a night in watching Little Fires Everywhere.

Best Dramas on TV

The Stranger (Netflix): This is the newest show on this list as it just came out in January of 2020. It’s about a family in England where the web of secrets just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It’s fast-paced, pretty hard to stop watching and is very entertaining. The Stranger Netflix

Zena Crown Vineyard: This intense, fast-paced drama warrants a wine just as intense and bold. One of my most favorite Oregon Pinot Noir producers is Zena Crown Vineyards. These wines have amazing flavor and express that they’re from Oregon yet they’re extremely elegant, smooth, and silky (which typically I don’t see as often in Oregon vs. in a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir). Purchase online here.

Zena Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir

Ozark (Netflix): I’ve been watching Ozark for a few years now and it’s great. Kevin Bateman is awesome (literally in every show he’s on he kills it) and his on-screen wife, Laura Linny is also great in the show. It’s about a family that gets into trouble, has to uproot their life and move to the Ozark’s (midwest). There is corruption, action and the cast is great.

Ozark

Round Pond Estate: Since Ozark is one of those shows both ladies and men will enjoy I’m picking a brand that has wines that may appeal to both. Guys watching Ozark will enjoy a glass of Round Pond Cabernet Sauvignon, ladies if you’re a Cab drinker that will make you happy or open a bottle of beautiful Rond Pond Estate Sauvignon Blanc.

Round Pond Estate

Succession (HBO): Succession reminds me of a newer version of Soprano’s. Although there is no mob it’s about a super-powerful New York Family who owns a HUGE media empire and all the “drama” and family dynamics within the family and within running the business. It’s very heavy but pretty addictive when you get into an episode or two.

Succession HBO

Alpha Omega Wines: Succession will pair best with a serious wine, either a big Cabernet Sauvignon such as one of my favorite’s from Alpha Omega Winery (shop online here)

Concourse d'elegance Alpha Omega Winery

Billions (Showtime): Billions is a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York finance that any former New Yorkers can relate to (with so much of my friends living in New York working in finance).  U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades and the brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod are on an explosive collision course constantly each outmaneuvering and outsmarting the other.

Chev: Billions is a pretty heavy show, so it requires a big wine such as a Pinot Noir like Chev (the newest brand from the team at CIRQ Wines, made by Winemaker Michael Browne of Kosta Browne) which I adore (when in doubt, a Pinot Noir is always a great idea for a red wine). Shop online here.

Chev Wines

Homeland (Showtime): Homeland is another fast-paced drama that will have you on the edge of your seat. Claire Danes is fabulous so is the entire cast. If you like war, action, in a fast-paced setting this is the show for you.

Homeland

Freeman Wines: Homeland will pair great with a beautiful Chardonnay such as beautiful Sonoma Coast Chardonnay from Freeman Wines.  This family-owned Sonoma Winery makes stunning wines and for Homeland one of their beautiful Chardonnays sounds perfect!

Freeman Wines

The Morning Show (Apple TV): Another great show that both gals and guys will get hooked on is The Morning Show. It stars Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell. It is meant to be a reflection of what happened with Matt Lauer on the Today show and it’s pretty entertaining.

The Morning Show

Une Femme Champagne:  The morning show is a great chick flick which will pair amazingly with a beautiful bottle of Champagne-like this by Une Femme created by female founder, Jen Pelka owner of one of my favorite Wine Bars, The Riddler.  Purchase  online here.
