The Best Burrito’s in the Mission
When you think of San Francisco’s Mission, delicious or shall we say, authentic flavorful Mexican food comes to mind. As a result of this reputation and abundance of authentic Mexican dining options Mexican food lovers can find it overwhelming deciding on which taqueria to visit from the abundant choices. Here you’ll find a Top Burrito list to help you experience the top 5 burritos in the Mission.
La Taqueria
A Mexican Burrito list would not be complete without the well-known La Taqueria. As you may have heard, this highest-rated Zagat spot is adored for their extremely delicious meaty carnitas or their unusual harder to find lengua (beef tongue) burritos. No matter what kind of burrito you order here you’ll be happy. Unless like the Taqueria Cancun lovers you can’t live without rice in your burrito. That is correct. La Taqueria does not jump on the rice bandwagon for their burritos. Give it a try anyway, we are pretty sure you won’t be disappointed. // 2889 Mission Street, San Francisco.
Even my little Frenchie Ernestine LOVES La Taqueria. It’s truly a crowd-pleaser.
Lolo
Another fabulous Mission eatery on this list is Lolo. I recently had their fried Avocado Burrito and fell in love. It’s beyond delicious and something I’ve never had elsewhere. 974 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110
Taqueria Cancun
At the top of my list is Taqueria Cancun. What sets them apart are a few things. First, the rice in their burritos is the best in the city. It’s hard to tell what secret ingredient they use, whatever it is, it is heavenly and none of their counterparts do it nearly as well. They also offer complimentary chips and salsa with every burrito or taco order. A small gesture, but as you’re sitting at the unassuming yellow picnic tables inside the restaurant enjoying the bottomless chips and salsa as you wait for your burrito it makes for a happy diner. Lastly, for any vegetarians, they have the best vegetarian burritos in the city. // 2288 Mission Street, San Francisco.
Papalote
Any San Francisco Mexican food lover knows of Papalote. If not, you should and you have probably experienced their well-known Papalote Salsa. Papalote has one of the “Top 5 Hot and Spicy Dishes in America” according to the Food Network’s recent show which aired Monday, January 18th, link here. What sets apart their burrito besides the amazing smoky, flavorful salsa? Each of the three proteins (beef, chicken and shrimp) gets their own special treatment according to co-owner Miguel Escobedo and are made to perfection. Don’t worry, if you can’t get to their Mission location, they have a second location in Nopa. // 3409 24th Street, San Francisco.papalote-sf.com
The Little Chihuahua
With multiple locations in the city this taqueria is worth getting to know. They use sustainable meat including 100% Grass-Fed Carne Asada. This is pretty impressive considering it’s a casual Mexican joint, not a high-end California farm to table restaurant where Grass-Fed is of course, the expectation and norm for us San Francisco foodies. The sustainable meat plus a focus on organic ingredients results in delicious Burritos. The Little Chihuahua also has the least rustic dining experience. It is still fairly casual yet not as rough on the edges as some of the authentic Mission taquerias like Cancun Taqueria or La Taqueria. 581 Mission Street, San Francisco. thelittlechihuahua.com.
Taquerias El Farolito
Described by Esquire Magazine as “The Most Life-Changing Burrito in America” El Farolito is another staple in the Mission burrito world. Those that have been know, like most of the other others on our top 5 list, Taqueria El Farolito has a minimal décor. Let’s be honest here, we are talking about taquerias they aren’t meant to be fancy. Yet, once you experience their food you won’t care what the setting is like. Impressing you with a consistent experience and high-quality flavorful food time after time, El Farolito will win you over with their seven meat options carne asada, lengua, and carnitas, pastole, chicken, chorizo, shrimp. With multiple locations in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose it’s evident this Taqueria is here to stay and is very good at what they do. 2779 Mission Street & various San Francisco, Oakland and other California locations.
