Where is Marin’s Muir Beach Located: Marin’s Muir Beach is located about 15 miles (or approximately 30 minutes) northwest of San Francisco. The easiest way to access the beach trails is by parking in the main lot which is easy to find if you follow signs for Muir Beach and/or follow your navigation. If you’re familiar with the Pelican Inn, Muir Beach is off the same road leading to the Pelican Inn parking lot.
If you plan to swim and enjoy the beach take note: There are no lifeguards at Muir Beach so swim at your own risk.
What are the trails like and what should you expect: The trails are spectacular! They are located along the edge of the ocean. If you hike on the coastal trail you can hike 3-5 miles one direction before turning around all while enjoying the amazing coastal views and beautiful ocean. It is truly spectacular.
Where else can you hike to: For those wanting a longer more strenous hike from The Muir Beach Trail you can hike to the Tennessee Valley Trail. I have never done this as typically a 1.7 mile hike in then returning back is enough for me (reminder, it’s quite hilly and steep) so this is not an easy hike!
What to pack: Be sure to pack water, snacks, layers, sunblock and a hat. I have learned the hard way that anytime I’m hiking to bring food, water and assume you may get lost (since I’ve had many California hikes where I get lost and am out much longer than expected!). Food, water and layers is key to be prepared for a longer adventure than planned!
The path from the Muir Beach onto the trailhead. You are literally feet from the edge of the coast it’s gorgeous!
What other Marin Hikes are similar if you enjoy Muir Beach: A few of my favorite Marin hikes include the Tennessee Valley hike as well as Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands. Both are fairly close to the city and great for short day trips from San Francisco.
