What exactly is Biodynamics? Developed in the 1920’s, Biodynamic Winemakers views the vineyard as a single organism. With this approach, eliminating synthetic chemicals is just the beginning. Biodynamic Winemaking goes further, encouraging biodiversity, a closed nutrient system, the use of homeopathic teas and a close personal connection to the land. Instead of bagged fertilizer, weed killer and pesticides biodynamic wineries rely on composting, natural predator-prey relationships, cover crops, and the animals that live on their estate to keep their vineyard healthy and balanced. Read more to learn about my favorite Biodynamic Wineries in California!

Benziger Family Winery

Benziger Family Winery is located in Sonoma’s charming Glen Ellen, just a few minutes away from the fabulous Glen Ellen Star Restaurant and is one of the most gorgeous wineries I’ve ever visited.  It’s located adjacent to Jack London State Historic Park, another must-see in Sonoma! 1883 London Ranch Rd, Glen Ellen, CA 95442

DeLoach Vineyards

Another of the Russian River Wineries that’s fabulous is DeLoach Vineyards. This is owned by the legendary Jean-Charles Boisset (aka J.C.B.) and makes biodynamic wines. This winery has some of the most spectacular vineyard views I have ever experienced and wines that are fabulous as well. It’s definitely one of my favorite Russian River Wineries. Be sure to save time to take pictures in their vineyards as they have some of the most photogenic views of any vineyard in the area.  1791 Olivet Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95401

Hamel Family Wines

Littoria Winery

After hearing about Littoria Wines for years and tasting them at various special events or special occasions, I was beyond excited to visit their Sonoma Coast Winery this Spring. Located in Sebastopol, California. Throughout the vineyards, there were piles of mulch and biodynamic composts. Since the entire vineyard is biodynamic everything is reused or put back into the earth to strengthen the soils and avoid any waste while also creating extremely fertile healthy soils to grow the incredible Littorai Wines in. Narrow Gate Vineyards is a special spot in California and most definitely deserves a visit. The winery consists of an intimate, boutique winery tucked away in Ponderosa pines just outside the historic town of Placerville, California. Preston Farm & Winery holds a special place in my heart as it’s located in one of my favorite places, Healdsburg, CA. The family-owned, organic property produces some of the most incredible wines as well as an assortment of olive oils.
